Periscope Summit Recap

periscope-logo-1920

New York Scope Week (AKA Periscope Summit) was one of the best “conferences” that I have attended in a long time. For a first time event, this by far exceeded my expectations. Here are my top take-a-ways from the event:

  1. Community – The supportive nature of the Periscope community is almost hard to believe. Everyone was exchanging contact information and business tips every day of the event. The authentic networking at this event is probably the top reason to attend in person. This is more than just exchanging a business card.
  2. Location – MIST Harlem turned out to be an AWESOME location. The stadium style seating was great and made it easy for everyone to see the presenters. New York City, although an expensive city to travel to, is full of a variety of activities to do outside of the conference. That was great for those of us that had family with us on the trip. Having a conference in a city with great public transportation is also a WIN.
  3. Presenters and Panelist – Everyone that spoke provided gems of information that we could all take back and apply to our business immediately.  Take the time to go to each of the speakers Katch.me sites to see if they saved their presentations. For the speakers that did, it will be well worth the time to watch the presentations in their entirety.
  4. Attending the next Periscope Summit is a must – If you were like me at the Summit, it was difficult to get to speak with all of the people you may have wanted to speak with that were in attendance. The beauty of attending in person is that you could pick up with conversations right off the bat that you may have started on Periscope.  Many people made connections that they will be able to call on if they visit that persons city.  The presenters were also very approachable and stayed around for the entire conference. I can’t imagine how AWESOME the next conference will be as more people are taking about attending.

If you attended the conference, please put your thoughts in the comments below. Many people have asked me why you should attend in person if you can see everything on Scope.  The answer is simple…..the in real life connections are invaluable.  They are worth way more then the price of the ticket. This is a conference that you want to attend in person!

The Future of Marketing

Businesswoman standing on a ladder looking through binocularsWhen you sit and think about the direction that marketing is going in, you can’t leave out social and mobile. I think that we all can agree that it is not a passing fad. A marketing/pr strategic plan that does not include these two elements is doomed for mediocracy.

The future winners will be those that can develop super creative content that can break through all of the clutter. Right now agencies are losing talented, out of the box thinking people to the Facebook’s and Google’s of the world. I think the future will be such that many big brands move away from the BIG agencies. The creative genius can now be found in freelancers, smaller agencies, and proper development of internal staff.

Here is a great article about Keith Weed’s, chief marketing for the Unilever brand, view on the future of marketing.

What do you see about the future of marketing/pr? Are BIG agencies going to remain the staple for BIG brands? Can brands train their own people do that they can save a chunk of their budget?

Define Your Brands Personality

Do you have the personality that will get out there and dance like no one is watching?

Do you have the personality that will get out there and dance like no one is watching?

Is it easy for you to define your brand’s personality?  Some brands are so clear about their direction and messaging and others still have some work to do.  Well, I think that we are guilty at Selsi Enterprises of having some work to do ourselves.  From what I hear, many of my PR colleagues are in the same boat because we spend so much time on our clients and not enough time on our own brands.  Our PR firms should have the coolest personalities around, but it seems that many lack that IT factor.  Why is this important? Because customer retention and the ability to gain new customer depend on your brand having IT.

Here are a few tips to see if your brand has that IT factor it needs to gain and retain customers:

  1. Are other individuals talking about your brand in social media or are you the only one talking about your brand?
  2. Have you created a level of traction that can sustain your business?
  3. Does your visual presentation have a recognizable style?
  4. Does the personality of your brand currently fit the audience that you target?
  5. Are you willing to make the necessary changes within your brand to grow and attract the right customes?

Spend some time answering these questions.  Once answered take a look at how your are living out what you desire your brand personality to be. Tweak where necessary and watch the results you get from making those tweaks. And by all means, have fun with it!!

Finding Inspiration from the Window Washers

Inspiration can even come from window washers.

Inspiration can even come from window washers.

You have heard the saying, ‘Inspiration can come from the strangest places.’ Well, I can completely agree! As someone who writes a good bit for clients, sometimes you just need a new perspective. A new way of looking at something that can help make the piece that is being communicated even more interesting and compelling.  You want to dive deep to bring out the reasons that your target audience needs to pay attention to this information.

This is where the window washers come in. You have the same product, service, or the same ‘view’ from the office window.  But, on a regular basis, it is important to take a step back and clean the windows. Look at the product, service, or ‘view’ from a new perspective.  Pretend it is your first time seeing the product or service.  What is your “first” reaction?

Your reaction may be that this product/service needs to be revamped.  Maybe you were going down the wrong path.  Or, just like a new element can be added in to the landscape of your view out of the window, there may be something new with your product/service that you are not paying attention to.  This may be something that should be highlighted in a better way.

So take a note from the page of the window washers. Every so often, take a step back for the sake of clarity. Let this fresh perspective guide you in freshening up your marketing and communication efforts.

In the comments below, let us know where you find inspiration.  You never know, you could give someone else the idea that they need to finish their project successfully!

Did your CEO send out a Happy Holiday message?

As we have polled several of our clients, we are noticing that more and more CEOs are not sending out holiday messages. We are not sure if it is lack of time or by choice that they are moving a way from the end of the year well wishes.

Some have stated that the CEOs are leaving this up to the managers because it can become more specific to what the employee has actually done throughout the year. Others say that their CEO prefers to give a welcome back message after the New Year. This message is said to set the tone for the year.

Who is to say which school of thought is correct. It is our thought that it depends on several factors. The culture, the type of news that needs to be shared, and the current level of employee morale.

What is your opinion of the CEO sending out a holiday message? We would love to hear your feedback.
